“Remember that you were once slaves in Egypt, but the Lord your God brought you out with his strong hand and powerful arm. That is why the Lord your God has commanded you to rest on the Sabbath day.”
Deuteronomy 5:15 NLT
Sabbath seems counterintuitive to us, especially those who grew up in a capitalistic, western world view. In fact so many of God’s ways do. For example: “If you want to gain, your life, you must lose it.” “The first will be last.” “It’s better to give than to receive.” “Bless those who curse you.” “Love your enemy and pray for those who persecute you.” The list goes on.
The reason why sabbath is important is because it resets our priorities each week. It highlights our trust in the Lord.
We work FROM rest. Unlike the western world view, which implies we work FOR rest. Sabbath also reminds us that we are free people, no longer enslaved. Taking a sabbath is a lot like taking vitamins, it is for our benefit. It is preemptive not reactive. It is not meant to keep us from being fruitful but rather to to keep us from becoming slaves and when done properly makes us even more fruitful.
If you are a person of faith, interested in faith or new to the faith, I encourage you to pray this alongside me,”Lord thank you for sabbath. Teach us to rest well as a symbol of our trust in you. Show us what that looks like. Amen. 🙏🏻” #sabbath#sunset#rest
